What is the MA Class I REC Connector?
The BERDO REC Connector is a simple way for building owners covered under Boston’s Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) to purchase qualifying Massachusetts Class I Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for compliance. At the end of this page, you will select your REC purchase quantity.
This site is only for BERDO-related REC purchases.
The Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) is a Boston law that requires large buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and report energy use to help the city reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) represents the environmental attributes of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a qualifying renewable energy resource.
When a REC is retired on behalf of a buyer, that buyer legally claims the renewable energy benefits — including the avoided emissions associated with one MWh of fossil-based electricity.
Only Massachusetts Class I RECs — typically sourced from local wind, solar, and other renewable projects — meet the eligibility requirements for BERDO.

BERDO Compliance Timeline
To remain in good standing with BERDO, follow these dates:
March 1 — REC purchase deadline for prior year compliance
May 15 — Proof of purchase must be uploaded to BERDO reporting
June 15 — RETIREMENT deadline for prior year RECs
All REC purchases made through the BERDO REC Connector will be retired on your behalf within the required timeline. REC retirement documentation will be provided to you by June 15th of the following year.

REC pricing includes all administrative services required for BERDO compliance, including transaction processing, NEPOOL GIS retirement, documentation, and support. Per-REC costs decline at higher volumes.
